Billy Joe Armstrong, the singer of Green Day, wrote the song “Waiting” and the title identifies some of the lyrics (feel free to continue singing along). As a young teenager, this song did not have much meaning other than it was a cool song written by my favorite band (at the time). However, as I have grown throughout high school and now, as a senior in college graduating in May, I definitely have a different perspective on this song.
When I first entered college, I had no idea that time would literally fly by this fast. From being a flustered freshman in the fall of 2011 to being a self-assured senior, I’ve discovered what I have been waiting for. I graduate in six and a half months and I catch myself thinking of that Green Day song, because now I understand the meaning of it for me and my experience up to this point in my life. On May 9th, I will finally get to say, “I’ve been waiting a long time for this moment to come”, and it won’t just be from listening to it on a typical day, but the day that I receive that piece of paper I’ve spent the last four years working for and paying thousands of dollars for.
So the next time you’re listening to a song from your teenage years, no matter how cliché or uncool it seems now, take another listen and find the deepest meaning for your current status in life; you just might see things in a new light.
