5 Lessons from a Mad Diva – Joan Rivers

Joan Rivers was known as crass, witty, and completely unfiltered. At the age of 81, she was still making people laugh and saying everything that no one else had the balls to say. She was an outspoken woman in a man’s world. One of the original divas to grace society with her presence, and in my humble opinion, someone who had a few more good years left in her. If you were as shocked as me with her sudden passing, I looked to her memorable pieces of work and influential quotes to find peace. And if nothing else, she gave some damn good life advice and a much needed laugh. Timeless words that even a Millennial can use in their journey called life.

“First of all, don’t worry about the money. Love the process. You don’t know when it’s gonna happen… And don’t settle… Also: Ignore your competition. Don’t worry about how others are doing. Something better will come.”

Generation-Y is not familiar with patience. We don’t wait for replies, transportation, or hook-ups. It is absolutely grueling to wait for your career to play out the way in which you want. Joan Rivers had it right. Love the process. Love the journey. Love the gratification you’ll feel when you finally make it in your mind.

“I succeeded by saying what everyone else is thinking.”

Preach sister. Joan Rivers established her career by saying everything that was on her mind. While some didn’t find it as humorous as the masses, she stayed true to herself and didn’t believe in censorship. She probably didn’t have that word in her vocabulary. Speak up. Let people hear your voice. You never know who is listening.

“I have to tell you it’s not going to be easy. Take every chance and every opportunity that you can. Don’t say ‘I can’t’ or ‘I shouldn’t’ or ‘I’m too tired.’”

It’s not fun if it’s easy. Take the necessary steps to get to where you want to be in your career and life. Opportunities arise when your eyes are open. Make sure you recognize the rights ones and go for it. Your future self will thank you later.

“Never be afraid to laugh at yourself, after all, you could be missing out on the joke of the century.”

We can be hypersensitive and take ourselves too seriously at times. People may not always be laughing with you, but it’s so much better hearing your own laughter in the mix.

“Life is very tough. If you don’t laugh, it’s tough.”

Just laugh. Whether it’s at yourself, with your friends, or anywhere in between, just laugh. Laughter wipes away almost every tear, and sometimes that’s the only thing that will get you through the day. Joan Rivers said it perfectly- life is tough, but it’s more enjoyable when you laugh.

Here’s to you, Joan Rivers. Thanks for the advice and legacy you left behind through several different generations. But most of all, thank you for the laughs.
