Your News, in List Form: Part 2

A few weeks ago I wrote an article on the prevalence of lists in current internet news media. News, (popular culture aside), it seems, has begun to appear more accessible to readers in this particular format. Why is that? I conducted a brief study, emailing folks a link to two articles discussing marriage in the 21st century. One article was presented in list-form. The other was not. I asked them to tell me which article they’d rather read. The result? 70% of people preferred the article in list-form. When askedRead More

On Growing Up in the Worst City in America

If you were to Google the burgeoning metropolis of Bakersfield, California you would find it is known for many things. Aside from carrots and Buck Owens, Bakersfield has made quite a name for itself as having the worst air quality, the most illiterate citizens, and the place where lost phone calls (and hopes and dreams) go to die, due to terrible cellphone reception. Either Forbes just hates Bakersfield or it really is a barren wasteland pretending to be a functioning society. But for me, Bakersfield has always just been home.Read More

FIBA: Where the B-Squad Happens

Basketball is one of the places where American exceptionalism still rings true. When we put out our best players, we dominate. In the 2014 FIBA world cup, we haven’t had our biggest stars. Chris Paul, Carmelo Anthony, Kevin Durant, Lebron James, Kevin Love and Dwight Howard are nowhere to be found. This year we’ve sent out the B-squad. The team this time around is younger, but still star laden, and it shows the future of the league. As the quarterfinals begin, here’s a quick summary of who’s on the roster.Read More

College Campuses Become Uber Safe

This past week, Uber expanded it’s taxi-like services to 22 college towns. If you’re unfamiliar with Uber, it’s a ridesharing service powered by smartphone apps: users use the app to find a driver, drivers use the app to find riders, and everything is done via card (which is great for those college students whose parents pay for everything). I was initially very surprised by the list of the 22 college’s that will now get to experience UberX. Several of them are in small towns or campuses that I don’t think ofRead More

Things I’ve Learned From Utah

3 months of living at home after college and the misery that accompanies such a mistake nearly devoured my spirit.  I decided on a flimsy whim to move to Utah at the invitation of an old high school friend.  Provo, UT was the strangest choice of pit stops on my post-grad real world adult life beginnings.  Living in one the of the most conservative cities in the U.S. for 9 months, where 98% of the population is Mormon, was certainly different and mostly interesting.  I’d like to think this importantRead More

The 5 Stupidest Advertising Campaigns Around Today

#5: Cialis – Making You so Sexy You and Your S/O Sit in Separate Bathtubs I never understood the logic here: if Cialis is supposed to give you rock-hard, incredible erections that will satisfy your partner beyond her wildest dreams, then why the hell is the closing scene in Cialis advertisements a man and a woman sitting in separate bathtubs? The only theory I can come up with is that Cialis leads to premature ejaculation and gives you a whole different list of sexual problems. Bummer.       #4:Read More

Social Media Life vs. Real Life

In this new age of technology and social sharing, millennials have seemed to have found a new fine line between reality and what we want our reality to be. Truthfully speaking, if you’re really getting drunk how is it possible for you post a red-eyed picture with perfect hastags? We all know that reality TV isn’t real (Insert shocking gasp.) Wait, you didn’t know that Brody and LC didn’t really date on The Hills? Or that Kim K…well nothing she does is real. It’s not really a surprise that society’sRead More

Why the Ice Bucket Challenge is Stupid

It’s absurd how fast things can spread around the Internet. Before someone cries and whines about how ALS is marginalized or whatever, hear me out. I think donating money to research ALS is awesome. Dumping an ice bucket over your head, not so awesome. Here is why: (like always, a short list for all the Attention Deficit people out there…so basically everyone).   It’s Narcissistic Yay! You got 75 likes because you participated. Now everyone will think you’re such a good person for doing that. I bet you got butterfliesRead More

Internet, Have You No Decency?

I’m not sure why people think it’s appropriate to post graphic material on social media. It’s one of the questions that perplex mankind; akin to “What’s the meaning of life?” or “What’s on the other side of a black hole?” or “If you’re so fancy, and I already know, then why do you feel the need to sing me a song about it?” Seemingly every day my Facebook feed blows up with memes about battered women and children, or a blog article about how a woman was brutally raped, orRead More
Rant: I am so tired of seeing “# Signs You Don’t Have a Grip on Being a Lady” and other shitty titles with 5 million likes and tweets accompanied by messages of understanding. Just because you can’t make a pie, you like to wear pants, and you are comfortable going several days without shaving or plucking a single hair does not mean you’ve lost your grip on femininity; perhaps it means you define it differently. Or maybe you just don’t care about societal expectations and gender roles. You do you.Read More

5 Celebrities I Hate (That You Should Hate Too)

Oh boy. I could make this list about 3,000 people long, but I doubt you’d want to read it any more than I want to write it. So instead, we’ll focus on the absolute worst of the worst; here are the 5 celebrities that I utterly, completely hate. (And yes, Plain White Tees, I am aware that hate is a strong word…but I mean it).   #5 – Blake Shelton I don’t know why, really. Maybe it’s his utter lack of talent, or maybe it’s because he hosts the freaking Voice. MostlyRead More

Why is Everyone on the Internet so Angry?

Has anyone else noticed a rise in angry, rude, and unnecessary comments online? Where there used to be likes, up votes, and encouraging comments there are now trolls and real angry words. What caused this shift, and why does it seem to be getting worse? Obviously some people’s mothers forgot to tell them that “if you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all.” Aside from missing life advice, there are five things that are definitely contributing to this wave, and there are surely others.  1. NewnessRead More

USA Knocked Out of World Cup: Still #1

If any of you have been trying to watch real sports on ESPN recently, you may have seen that the United States Men’s Soccer team was eliminated from this World Wide European and South American soccer tournament known as the World Cup. Despite making it further than much of the world expected, the Yanks could not prevail over the world’s leading waffle maker. This comes to no surprise because historically America has not been the best at soccer , football, futbol, or whatever the heck it is called. America mayRead More
