This is not a review. This is a recommendation that you, reader, take 90 minutes of your time and watch a documentary about YouTubers. The film is called Please Subscribe. The director is Dan Dobi. The cast is made up of famous YouTubers discussing their foray into YouTube-dom. These stories are fascinating for a number of reasons, reasons I will not list because the Internet is overrun with lists as it is. Suffice it to say, the expository nature of each YouTuber’s respective story allows for the utmost emotional honesty.

Whether good or bad, the celebrities are the ones showing most of the population how to dress and how to dance and how to talk. They have the loudest voices and while many of them use it to compete in the “Who can be more outlandish for views?” competition; some of them actually use it to inspire deeper thinking or activate action. The list of celebrities

It’s a story we’ve heard before, namely on the popular HBO show Girls, but that does not make this story any less engrossing. Sometimes truth must be told several times before it sets in. Rakoff’s memoir documents her year working for the literary agency which represented J.D. Salinger. The book is not so much about J.D. Salinger, or the fans that write to him whose letters are never delivered. It is more about Rakoff’s coming
Read MoreI think it’s safe to say that I am going to be a professional bridesmaid. “Will you be my bridesmaid?” My answer is always yes- “yes; I would be honored to prep you for your new forever.” Since my first two wedding duties are across the country, and within a month from one another, I followed my answer with a request for the brides, “Please make this forever, if not for me, then for my bank account.” Luckily, they said that was the plan and I believed them. Being

My bae, God’s voice bestowed upon us in human earthly form, Sam Smith has this song called “Leave Your Lover,” which is exactly what it sounds like. Like bruhhhh, why does this trope exist? Of course her man can’t love her like you can, but maybe that’s why she chose to be with him over you? You think you can love her “more,” that’s debatable, but more is not necessarily better. You can put

I wish I cared what your boring boyfriend chose to eat for breakfast to accommodate his Paleo diet and stomach sensitivity to dairy, but I don’t. I would rather gag myself with the bright green straw in charge of my Bloody Mary consumption and re-eat the marbled pieces of olive after I’ve thrown them up than continue the conversation. After this instance I realized that

Nearly all adult dance floors yield the same experience for me (excluding Mormon ones, which I greatly prefer, because we leave room for Jesus in between). It typically goes like the beginning of an Ashlee Simpson song: All my girls stand in a circle and clap your hands, this is for you. Okay, so there’s not a lot of clapping happening, but there is a collection of boozy guys lurking in the periphery, trying to decide which stranger to approach and
Read MoreA sensation in the news this week: an Ohio State student had run onto the field during an Ohio football game and was taken down by a coach, who seemingly was just “protecting” his players. Anthony Wunder, a fourth-year engineering student, has completely lost his scholarship that covers his tuition and housing. He was charged with misdemeanor criminal trespassing. There has been talk as to whether or not the right and appropriate measures were taken. I watched a video on ESPN Go of Jemele Hill and Michael Smith with different

Aside from carrots and Buck Owens, Bakersfield has made quite a name for itself as having the worst air quality, the most illiterate citizens, and the place where lost phone calls (and hopes and dreams) go to die, due to terrible cellphone reception. Either Forbes just hates Bakersfield or it really is a barren wasteland pretending to be a functioning society. But for me, Bakersfield has always just been home.
Read MoreI’ve never been a big fan of “the birthday.” While I certainly appreciate the extra love on Facebook from people I haven’t seen since Myspace was the accepted social network, I just don’t feel the need to be celebrated for a full 24 hours. What did I accomplish? Being born? Shouldn’t you be sending wishes to the woman who went through horrific labor in order to literally squeeze me out into this world? I mean, really. Nonetheless, regardless of how undeserving I may feel of the cakes and checks, I can’t
Read MoreHere’s a question worth asking: why does contemporary news come in list-form? It used to be we’d get the occasional, yearly ‘Top 10 Albums’, ‘Top 10 Movies’, ‘Top 10 Books’ lists, and so on. In recent years, though, the practice of utilizing lists became somewhat of a go-to platform for authors of popular culture. Lists ranking a year’s most entertaining television shows evolved into indexed accounts of where to find the most delicious nonfat lattes in southern California. If you were wondering why giraffes should be your favorite animal, Buzzfeed
